Choosing the Right Protective Packaging for Fragile Exports

Export shipments travel further, get handled more often and sit in more varied climates than domestic orders. That means the packaging decision you make at the factory floor directly affects how much product survives the journey to Dubai, Singapore or Lagos. This guide breaks down how to match the right protective material to the goods you ship.
Start with the failure mode, not the product
Every fragile product fails in a specific way — glass cracks under impact, electronics fail from static discharge, powder-coated metal scuffs from abrasion. Pick the material that defends against the dominant failure mode first, then layer in the rest.
- •Impact & shock → EPE foam and thick bubble roll absorb drops and rough handling.
- •Static discharge → Antistatic film protects PCBs, semiconductors and sensitive electronics.
- •Abrasion & surface marks → Fine-bubble roll and foam wrap prevent scuffing during transit.
- •Moisture & humidity → Moisture-resistant films matter for long sea freight to tropical markets.
Match cushioning to the transit distance
A parcel moving across a city needs far less cushioning than one crossing an ocean. For long-haul export we recommend increasing bubble thickness and adding an EPE foam layer at corners and edges — the points that absorb the most force during container handling.
A simple rule of thumb
- •Domestic / short haul: single layer 10mm bubble roll.
- •Regional export (Middle East, SE Asia): 25mm bubble roll + foam corners.
- •Long sea freight (Africa, Americas): EPE foam cradle + bubble outer wrap + moisture barrier.
Don’t forget the outer securement
Protective inners are only half the story. Palletised export loads need stretch film to stay stable through multiple handling points, and strong adhesive tapes to keep cartons sealed against humidity and pressure changes. A well-cushioned box inside a poorly wrapped pallet still arrives damaged.
