Machine Stretch Film vs Hand Stretch Film

Stretch film is not one SKU. Hand rolls and machine rolls differ in width, length, cling, and how much the film is designed to stretch. Ordering the wrong type is a common reason pallets telescope or film cost blows out.

Hand stretch

Shorter rolls, often narrower, meant to be applied by an operator walking around the pallet. Cling should hold the tail without tape. Gauge is often a little higher than machine film because there is no powered pre-stretch. Good for low volume, mixed loads, and sites without a wrapper.

Machine stretch

Longer rolls for turntable or rotary-arm wrappers. The machine applies pre-stretch, so a lower micron can still hold a load if the film is made for that stretch ratio. Tell us the machine brand and the percentage pre-stretch it is set to.

• •Do not put machine film on a hand wrap station and expect the same yield.
• •Do not assume thicker film is safer — puncture from sharp corners needs a different grade.
